Copy Design: assigning numbers with the Number Generator (Assign #)

Besides renaming by hand, Copy Design can pull the new names straight from the Number Generator. On the right of the window there is a Number Generator block with a small input box for the sequence (for example P-) and the Assign # button.

This link is optional and only works when the Number Generator is configured and its database connection (PostgreSQL) is reachable. When the window opens the button reads Connecting…; afterwards it becomes Assign # (connected) or Not connected. In the latter case, configure the connection via Settings → Number Generator.

How Assign # works:

  • Enter a sequence prefix and click Assign #. You get a confirmation stating how many new numbers will be drawn from the sequence.
  • Every model (part, sheet metal, assembly or presentation) set to Copy gets its own number in the form prefix + number (for example P-1000).
  • Drawings automatically follow their model: the .idw and .dwg get the same number as their part or assembly, so P-1000.ipt and P-1000.idw stay together.

All numbers are drawn in one transaction (all-or-nothing): if the database drops out halfway, nothing is consumed and nothing is half-renamed. Note: drawn numbers are consumed, even if you cancel the copy afterwards.
